This is the overhead in front of my house.  Several things are illustrated here.  The pairs of running wires are ~1/2 inch copper with a squashed figure-8 cross-section, two grooves near the top allow the hangers to grip the wire without interfering with the passage of the bus' contacts.  The hangers are attached to hanger bars here, since the span wire is also a electrical connection, in this case to ground.  The hanger bars are non-conductive, so the hot wire (middle wires) is isolated.  Where the span wire is not electrical, it has ceramic parts that isolate it and the hangers also.
